REFLECTION
Define Camera Obscura.
Camera Obscura means a dark, or boxed in camera.
Explain the steps to create, expose and process a pinhole camera image:
First we took an altoids box and spray painted it black, then we drill a hole in it, and took a thin piece of aluminum and put an even tinier hole in it using a thin needle. We covered these holes with black tape for the time being to reduce light getting in until we were ready to expose the negative. We put the blank negative in and closed the altoids box.
Next we chose a place to put our camera and taped it there, we took the black tape off the lens and left it alone for almost a week.
Finally we took the cameras back off, covering the lens and w scanned the negative onto the computer. We inverted the colors, flipped horizontal and vertical, and adjusted the levels.
How did you create a shutter and aperture on your pinhole camera body?
The shutter is the larger hole we drilled first into the altoids box, the aperture is the smaller on we made with a needle.
What was the focal length of the cameras?
The focal length is the width of the box.
Where did you place your camera and what was your exposure time?
I placed my camera on a light in the faculty and guest parking lot. The exposure time was almost a week.
What was the light source for the exposure?
The sun.
After taking down your camera and seeing the results, how did the image appear on the light sensitive paper?
The image appeared very light.
Explain the steps you took to "process" your pinhole negative with the scanner and Photoshop.
We scanned the negative unto the computer and sent it to ourselves. Then in photoshop we inverted the colors and flipped the image. Finally we adjusted the brightness and levels.
Finally, what surprised you about your results? If you could re-do the process, what would you do differently to change your results?
What surprised me is how different the photo looked from where it was taken, how far away everything looked, and how blurry things were. I would use a smaller aperture.
